Hudson

Long before 1840, when fur trappers Louis Massey and Peter Bouchea settled at the mouth of the Willow River, Native Americans lived in the areas that would become Wisconsin and Minnesota. They buried their dead underneath mounds facing the St. Croix River. Massey and Bouchea respected the mounds - many of which still stand in Birkmose Park, overlooking Hudson -- and built their trading post to the north, at the confluence of the Willow River and the St. Croix River. Soon after the trading post opened, settlers came to the St. Croix Valley.

One such settlement was given the name Hudson in 1852. By the late 19th century, Hudson had developed into a steamboat and lumber center. The town manufactured thrashers and separators, built carriages and produced granulated sugar. Hudson had four hotels, two breweries, an opera house and a YMCA.

The Octagon House, built in 1855, is representative of the architectural style popular in Hudson’s early period. The eight-sided home was built for a New York judge. Today the building is owned by the St. Croix County Historical Society and is open to the public. The home is filled with period pieces and the carriage house contains displays about the early settlers of the region.

Hudson’s crowning glory is its extensive and beautiful network of parks, lakes and rivers, which encourages a wide variety of outdoor recreation year-round. Willow River State Park contains more than 3,000 acres of forests, lakes and waterfalls. Activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, sailing and canoeing are popular in the warmer months. Lakefront Park features a boat launch, playground, volleyball courts and a swimming beach, while other city parks offer ball courts, baseball diamonds, play areas and picnic grounds. Kinnickinnic State Park, with more than 1,200 acres of open prairie and forestland, is a picnicker’s paradise. A wide, sandy river delta is available for day use and overnight camping.

Students in Hudson attend schools within the excellent Hudson School District. The district’s students consistently rank above the state and national averages on standardized tests and ACT scores are well above the national average. The student-teacher ratio is outstanding-approximately 13 students for each teacher.
